In the Spring of 2017, I was fortunate to be able to participate in curriculum mapping as the Human Resources diploma and advanced diploma programs were undergoing program review. Curriculum mapping is the first step in a comprehensive program review process. The Curriculum mapping process includes analysis of program outcomes, EESOs, teaching-learning strategies, and assessment methods.
In preparation for curriculum mapping, I analyzed the alignment between course learning outcomes, program standards and industry standards for one of the courses I teach, recruitment & selection (course_outline.pdf). As indicated in my Curriculum Values & Beliefs, my approach to curriculum is to be intimately familiar with the HR competency framework, developed by the Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario, which serves as the foundation for all HRPA credential requirements. Alignment between these industry standards and course learning outcomes will allow me to better prepare students for their certification exam. Mapping the industry standards and ministry standards to course learning outcomes helps ensure that the courses I teach are robust and meet the needs of various stakeholders.
Below please find the spreadsheet that I used to assist me in my analysis which is accompanied by an audio description of the information presented.

The result of my analysis was to recommend that an additional course learning outcome be added to enhance alignment between course learning outcomes, program standards and industry requirements. The elements of performance relating to recruitment and selection vocational outcomes from the Program Standards (mtcu_business_human_resources_program_standard.pdf) and the HRPA Competency Framework (hrpa_competency_framework.pdf) indicate that HR practitioners must be skilled in conveying the organization’s brand in order to recruit suitable applicants – this outcome was not captured in the course learning outcomes. As such, my recommendation was to include a seventh course learning outcome – “Convey the Organization’s brand in order to recruit suitable applicants”. The addition of this learning outcome impacted other components of curriculum, specifically, teaching-learning strategies and assessment methods. Teaching and learning strategies pertaining to this new learning outcome were incorporated into week 6 lesson plans and the course’s major term project was modified to evaluate this new learning outcome.
